Weekly Year Level Updates

Dear Prep Families,

This week in Reading, our Prep students continued to strengthen their decoding and reading fluency skills. They revised and practised a range of strategies to help them decode unfamiliar words in texts, such as:

  • Identifying beginning sounds, including digraphs,
  • Using picture clues
  • Applying segmenting and blending techniques.

Students also participated in Buddy Reading, where they supported one another and practised reading together. This collaborative experience helped reinforce the strategies they’ve been learning while keeping them engaged in a fun and encouraging way. To support your child at home, we kindly encourage you to continue reading their take-home readers with them each evening. Prompt your child to use the decoding strategies they are learning when they come across unfamiliar words. After reading, take a few minutes to discuss the book together. You might ask:

  • “What happened in the story?”
  • “Can you describe what is happening in this picture?”
  • “How is the character feeling, and how do you know?”

These conversations help build comprehension skills and deepen your child’s connection to the text. Thank you for your continued support in developing your child’s love for reading.

In Phonics this week, students continued to explore the ‘wh’ digraph. We also practised breaking words into syllables and about ‘id’ onset and rime sound and found words that rhyme such as slid, kid, skid. To support your child at home, you can practise these sounds during reading at home or using this knowledge to support them in their writing.

In Writing, students have been orally rehearsing their ideas using picture prompts linked to our Unit of Inquiry on toys. This has helped them form simple, complete sentences while encouraging the use of high frequency words (HFW) and attentive listening to the sounds in words. At home, families can support this by prompting their child to say their sentence aloud before writing, count how many words are in the sentence, and listen carefully to the sounds they hear. Encourage the use of familiar high frequency words such as with, what, that, they, there, and this

In Numeracy and Unit of Inquiry, we are now in the Action Stage of our toy design project. Students have been exploring different types of materials and discussing which ones are most suitable for building a toy. As part of this process, they have collected and organised data on the properties of various materials and conducted peer surveys to find out which materials their classmates would prefer to use in their own designs. Using this data, students made informed decisions about what materials they will use for their toy. This has helped develop both their data interpretation skills and understanding of material suitability. Next week, we will begin the exciting phase of building our toys, where students will apply their research, creativity, and collaboration skills to bring their designs to life!

Student led conferences:

Our upcoming Student-Led Conferences are now open for booking via Compass. Each conference is scheduled for 15 minutes, giving your child the chance to take the lead, showcase their recent learning, and reflect on their progress with you. We encourage you to secure a time that suits your family and look forward to celebrating your child’s achievements together.

Science works volunteers:

Thank you to all the families who expressed interest in supporting our upcoming Scienceworks excursion. We are pleased to confirm that our selected parent helpers have been notified. We truly appreciate your willingness to volunteer your time to support our students. Unfortunately, due to bus capacity and the required student-to-adult ratio, we were not able to accommodate all parent volunteers on this occasion. Thank you for your understanding and ongoing support.

Prep Team

Dear Parents and Carers,

The students have learnt so much in Week 8! It’s been wonderful to see their excitement and curiosity across all areas of learning.

Here’s a look at our week together:

📚 Reading

This week, students focused on the strategy of summarising texts. They learned to identify the most important parts of a text to summarise the main idea clearly. We introduced the “Somebody, Wanted, But, So, Then” framework to help students organise their thoughts and summarise fiction texts effectively, supporting their understanding of key story elements.

🔤 Phonics

Our phonics focus was on the /ph/ sound as in dolphin and the /f/ sound as in fish. Students explored these sounds through engaging nursery rhymes, helping them hear, identify, and compare the different ways the /f/ sound can be represented in words.

✍️ Writing

In Writing, we began exploring persuasive texts. Students learned how to strengthen their arguments by using evaluative adjectives to clearly express their opinions and persuade their readers. They practised structuring their ideas with reasons to make their writing more convincing.

🔢 Numeracy

Students have been exploring and sorting 2D shapes by examining their features. They investigated whether shapes have parallel lines, whether they are quadrilaterals, and what happens when shapes are composed or decomposed. These activities supported their understanding of how shapes work and connect.

🔍 Inquiry

In Inquiry, students are learning to ask open-ended questions to help them gather deeper information. They have begun thinking about who in our community they would like to find out more about, as they continue exploring the central idea:

“People take on roles and responsibilities to build a community.”

🏊 Swimming Update

Swimming has been going wonderfully! We’re so proud of how independent and organised the students are becoming. Packing their own bags, drying their towels (please ensure it’s an appropriate size), and managing their swimwear is helping build confidence and responsibility.

Please continue to label all items, including shoes!

Dear Grade Two Families,

We’ve had another engaging and creative week in Year 2!

Our exploration of the Unit of Inquiry, How We Express Ourselves, continues to inspire rich and meaningful learning. This week, students began designing their own digital media artworks using images, text, and sound in iMovie. To express a story or emotion that connects with an audience, combining artistic choices with purposeful storytelling. The results are already looking fantastic!

In Reading, students are beginning to focus closely on the power of an author’s word choice. They are learning how specific words can help them visualise scenes and even feel emotions as they read. This deeper engagement with text is supporting their comprehension and sparking insightful discussions.

In Writing, students are continuing to build their narratives and are now taking inspiration from reading to “show, not tell” in their own stories. They’re working to create vivid mental images for their readers through carefully chosen language that captures both action and emotion.

In Numeracy, our measurement unit is progressing into more formal methods. This week, students will be using rulers to measure length accurately, create lines of specific lengths, and interpret measurements from various starting points—including problem-solving when the ruler doesn’t begin at 0. They’ll also practise comparing objects and calculating the difference in length to determine which is longer or shorter.

A few important reminders:

Wednesday 18th June – H25 and H26 (Jane & Melanie’s classes) will attend the ACMI Excursion. Please ensure payment is made via Compass as soon as possible.

Wishing you all a safe and restful weekend!

Dear Grade 4 families,

It has been another great week in Grade 4! Here’s what we have been up to:

In Literacy, we have been using text clues to help us answer questions, and in writing, we have been editing to improve our texts with a focus on stretching out our ideas.

In Numeracy, we have continued our unit on Measurement, looking at the concept of capacity. Students have measured capacity and made conversions between millilitres and litres.

Students have developed a design in Unit of Inquiry that would help with life’s little inconveniences. Students developed ‘what if’ questions, then worked through the design thinking process to improve things in their lives.

Our Scienceworks excursion is next week!

  • Tuesday 17 June – Classes H35, H36 and H37 will attend.
  • Thursday 19 June – Classes H34, H38, H39 and H55 will attend.

Students are required to bring their lunch and snacks in a disposable bag (no lunchboxes). Water bottles are allowed.

Reminders:

  • Student Parent Teacher Conferences are in Week 11. Bookings will be available soon via Compass.

We look forward to another wonderful week ahead.

Warm regards,

The Grade 4 Team

Dear Grade Five Families,

In Reading, students have continued developing more sophisticated prediction skills by using text evidence, character motivations, and plot structure to anticipate what might happen next. They are learning to make and revise their predictions as they read, justifying their thinking with specific clues from the text. This supports deeper comprehension and critical thinking, particularly when reading more complex and unfamiliar texts.

In Writing, students have been exploring how persuasive devices are used in advertisements to influence an audience. They have identified and experimented with features such as emotive language, rhetorical questions, exaggeration, repetition, and inclusive language. Students have continued working through the writing cycle and have been drafting their advertisements — we can’t wait to see their published pieces!

In Numeracy, students have begun exploring probability and chance by conducting experiments and analysing outcomes. They have used tables and probability trees to organise and represent all possible outcomes, particularly in multi-step events (like rolling two dice or flipping two coins). Students have also explored the connection between probability, decimals, and percentages by expressing the likelihood of events in all three forms.
Have some time over the weekend? Ask your child to teach you the game Number Tracks!

Reminders:

  • French Dress Up Day – Thursday 26th June
  • Final Camp Payment due by the 30th June
  • Student/Parent/Teacher Conferences- 2nd July (Student-free day)

We look forward to another great week of learning with our wonderful Grade Five students.

Dear Grade 6 Families,

In Reading, students are now making text-to-self connections to deepen their understanding of characters, themes, and messages in texts. This helps them reflect more personally and meaningfully on what they read.

In Writing, we are continuing our work on persuasive texts. Students are moving through the full writing cycle—from planning and drafting to revising and publishing—as they refine their arguments and learn to write with purpose and clarity.

In Numeracy, we are now shifting our focus from area and perimeter to volume. Students will be investigating how to calculate and compare volume using practical and problem-solving activities.

Reminders:

  • Parliament Incursion: Our Parliament incursion series will begin on Wednesday, June 18th. This will support our current inquiry into the Australian government and democracy.
  • Interschool Sports: A huge congratulations to all students involved in Interschool Sports. The season has now wrapped up, and we are incredibly proud of the way students represented our school with skill and sportsmanship.
  • Student-Led Conferences: Bookings for our Week 11 Student-Led Conferences will be opening soon! Keep an eye out for the link to secure your time.

Please also keep an eye out for some exciting writing competitions coming up—students will have the opportunity to share their work and voices beyond the classroom.

Thank you for your ongoing support with behaviour expectations. We’re beginning to see a positive shift across the cohort, and we’ll keep working over the coming weeks to maintain this trend.

As always, if you have any questions, please come in for a chat.

Have a great week!

From the Grade 6 team,
Sam, Chloe, Lauren, Shana, Heath, Escher, Bernadette, Rachel, Kafa, and Sarah

Disability Inclusion

Kororoit Creek Primary School is excited to introduce Disability Inclusion, a new approach to help us improve support for students with disability and build a more inclusive school for all our students.

Inclusive schools have better outcomes in learning, engagement and wellbeing for all students.

Disability Inclusion will help our school better understand what our students need to help them learn, through:

  •   a new funding model with more investment
  •   a new strength-based process called the Disability Inclusion Profile to help identify the student’s needs and required adjustments
  •   more training and coaching for teachers and school staff about the best ways to support student learning.

A new funding model with more investment

The new funding model provides additional investment that our school can use to support many students including those with autism, learning difficulties and more.

This additional investment will provide more support for students with disability, including students who haven’t been eligible for individual funding through the Program for Students with Disabilities (PSD) in the past.

Our school can use this funding for a range of activities including

  •   more training and professional development for teachers and school staff
  •   getting expert advice about disability
  •   hiring teachers or other staff to help plan and deliver changes for students
  •   equipment and resources to support learning.

The Disability Inclusion Profile

The Disability Inclusion Profile will help us find out more about your child’s strengths and needs. It will inform personalised funding allocations, help us plan student learning and any changes a student may need to better learn.

The new Disability Inclusion Profile process will replace the Educational Needs Questionnaire used as a part of the current PSD.Disability Inclusion img 300x282

As we transition over the next three years, families of students who are part of the PSD will be asked to attend a meeting to complete a Disability Inclusion Profile.

People who know your child will be involved in the meeting, along with an independent, trained facilitator who will help our school and families complete the profile.

If your child is part of the PSD, we will work with you to find the most suitable time to complete their profile.

The profile will also be available to a broad group of students with high needs.

We will identify students who are not currently part of the PSD, who may benefit from a Disability Inclusion Profile. If we consider that your child’s education will benefit from having a profile, we will contact you.

More training and coaching for teachers and school staff

Disability Inclusion will give more teachers and support staff a better understanding of disability and how to respond. This could include access to:

  •   more professionals in schools who are experts in disability
  •   coaching
  •   professional learning
  •   evidence-based guidance and resources
  •   scholarships.
